Stitching and Finishing Instructions for "Harmony"
Materials:
15cm square of Zweigart 17 mesh Yellow Camilla mono canvas
Eterna Silk: one skein of each of the following threads – Silk Twist 5 #
300, # 580, # 4060; Silk Twist 8 # 4100; Silk Twist 12 # 290, # 3000; Overdyed
Twist 5 Candlelight
Tapestry needles size 24 and 26
Permanent black marker with fine point
Round Brass Frame with 65mm aperture (Framecraft’s F3A frame www.framecraft.co.uk)
1 Remove the transparent plastic from the frame, place it centrally on the
canvas and draw round the edge with the marker. This will give you an outline
corresponding to the circular black line on the chart which indicates the outer
edge of the background stitching. Mark the centre of the work area with tacking
stitches.
2 Working outwards from the centre of both the chart and the canvas, work the
lettering in cross stitch from the chart using Silk Twist 8 # 4100 in the size
24 needle. Complete each cross stitch before moving on to the next one. Work the
motif in tent stitch using Silk Twist 5 # 580 and # 4060. Each symbol on the
chart represents one cross stitch or one tent stitch worked over one canvas
thread.
3 Work the background pattern in Scottish stitch. First work seven-stitch
blocks of diagonal satin stitch using Overdyed Twist 5 Candlelight in the size
24 needle, spacing the blocks one canvas thread apart and stitching right up to
the outline. Fill the spaces between the blocks with rows of tent stitch using
Silk Twist 5 # 300.
4 Change to the size 26 needle and outline both the lettering and the motif
with back stitches worked over one canvas thread. Use Silk Twist 12 # 290 to
outline the lettering and # 3000 to outline the motif.
5 When the needlepoint is completed, cut round the outline carefully and
mount the needlepoint in the frame following the manufacturer’s instructions,
but omitting the transparent plastic. Thread a loop of ribbon through the hanger
to make a loop and tie the ends in a bow.
