Materials: Eterna Silk MiniTwist (Eterna Silk Stranded thread may also be used; change usage from 2 threads to 1 thread in all stitches) in colors indicated. One piece of 32 count white Belfast linen, approximately 7" x 12".
Stitches used:
Following the charted design, use one thread of Eterna Silk™ MiniTwist
for the year, the monogram, and the smaller heart backstitching. Use two
threads of Eterna Silk™ for all other stitches. Please note that there
are several half stitches and several "over 1" stitches in the
chart.
Working the design:
Fold your piece of linen into thirds, lengthwise on the fabric. Your
folded dimensions will be 7" x 4". Following the charted design,
find the center of your bottom third. You will work the design on this
bottom third, which will become the top "envelop" flap of your
sachet. After centering the design, count out 2 threads from the left,
right, and bottom design edges. Draw out the next two threads on the same
sides-these drawn out threads will be the placement for your hemstitched
edge (if you prefer not to hemstitch your edges, make your hem as you
prefer around all edges, leaving two threads from your edge to the
design). Fold your edges in to the drawn threads, making your hem fold
meet the drawn threads but not overlapping them. You may cut the edges to
obtain the hem depth of your choice. Using two threads of Eterna Silk™
MiniTwist (color 0 or color 1, depending upon your fabric color selection)
make a simple hem stitch or a ladder hem stitch, hem around all edges.
Work the hemstitching all along the long edges (do not stop at the top of
the design; continue all around). You are now ready to stitch the main
design.
Finishing:
Lightly press your finished piece with a cool dry iron. Do not use
steam or dampen your piece, as this may cause the dyes in the red color
thread to bleed. If cleaning is needed, please take your piece to a dry
cleaner familiar with cleaning silk needlework. After pressing, fold up
the piece into thirds, and work a decorative edging stitch on both the
left and right sides, creating an "envelop" of your piece. You
may leave your sachet open, or after filling your sachet you may lightly
baste the top flap down to keep the sachet in place. Please remove any
sachet before subsequent cleaning.
